Delta flight slides off runway in Detroit

(CNN) — Passengers on a Delta Air Lines flight experienced an unexpected bump Sunday when the plane rolled off the runway after landing in Detroit.

Flight 753 from Las Vegas was trying to turn onto a taxiway when it slipped off the pavement, according to the Wayne County Airport Authority. It’s not clear yet what caused the plane to slide off course, spokesman Scott Wintner said.

“It was like a toboggan ride down the runway, and we just couldn’t make the turn at the end, and we slid off the runway into the grass,” passenger Steve Maranowski told CNN affiliate WDIV.

The aircraft, carrying 153 passengers and six crew members, was pulled back onto the taxiway and towed to the gate, according to Delta spokesman Anthony Black. The plane was not damaged, and no one was injured, Black said.

Passengers spent about two and a half hours on the taxiway, Maranowski told WDIV.

“The problem was they had to wait for the salt trucks, wait for the towing company, and wait for the operations to get it out,” he said.

Black said Delta and the airport will investigate to determine operating conditions at the time of the incident.

DOT: New Airline Passenger Protections to Take Effect This Week

New DOT regulations go into effect this week to help ensure that consumers are treated fairly when they travel by air, the department said in a statement. Among the new provisions are requirements that airlines and ticket agents include all mandatory taxes and fees in published airfares and that they disclose baggage fees to consumers buying tickets.

Also beginning this week, passengers will be able to hold a reservation without payment, or cancel a booking without penalty, for 24 hours after the reservation is made, if they make the reservation one week or more prior to a flight’s departure date. Further, airlines will be required to promptly notify passengers of flight delays of over 30 minutes, as well as flight cancellations and diversions, and they generally will be prohibited from increasing the price of passengers’ ticket after it is bought. The advertising provision takes effect Jan. 26, 2012 while all of the other consumer protections go into effect on Jan. 24.

This action follows previous requirements made last August, including a four-hour time limit on tarmac delays for all international flights at U.S. airports, and extended the three-hour tarmac delay limit for domestic flights to smaller airports. It also required additional airlines to report their lengthy tarmac delays to DOT.

American Airlines Flight Turbulence Injures 6

Six crew members aboard an American Airlines flight en route from Brazil to Miami Sunday were sent to the hospital after the flight experienced severe turbulence, airline officials said.

American Airlines Flight 980 was carrying 136 passengers and nine crew members from Brazil’s Recife Airport to Miami International Airport when it was hit with bad turbulence, airport spokeswoman Maria Levrant said.

Passengers said the turbulence occurred about two hours into the eight-hour flight, and came out of nowhere.

“Everybody just moved up in their seat and some of them just smashed against the ceiling,” passenger Gillas Correa told ABC affiliate WPLG.  ”The turbulence is like I’ve never seen anything, I mean, like not even a roller coaster.”

The crew was said to be caught by surprise and thus took the brunt of the injuries.  One flight attendant was reportedly hit by a food cart that flew into the air, which damaged the plane’s ceiling and then landed on her.

Firefighters from the Miami-Dade Fire Department met the flight when it landed in Miami around 6:30 p.m. local time and took five of the injured crew members to area hospitals.

The sixth injured crew was treated on the scene, and no passengers were injured, according to WPLG.  No other information was released about the severity of the crew’s injuries.

Passengers described the scene on board the plane as one of chaos once the turbulence hit.

“It was a terrible experience,” passenger Christianne Menezes told WPLG. “Terrible, totally scared.”

They also described the heroics of one passenger who, by chance, was an emergency room physician who helped treat the injured while the plane was still in the air.

“The lucky thing is that we had a medical room doctor, some ER emergency room doctor,” passenger Correa told local media.

“There’s a lot of people screaming, a lot of people crying,” he said of the flight.

and Air Show Safety Hearing, which takes place on January

10, 2012.  The start time for the hearing, which is being
