Investigation on U of M Basketball Team Flight Reveals Possible Cause

.

The NTSB has discovered the Boeing MD-83 which carried the University of Michigan basketball team but aborted takeoff may have had mechanical issues.

The report describes that “…when investigators tried to move the elevator surfaces by hand, the left elevator moved normally, but the right elevator was jammed in a trailing edge-down position (airplane nose down).”

The elevator controls the pitch of the airplane, which is crucial during takeoff maneuvers. Damage to the right elevator may have contributed to the aborted takeoff, ejecting the plane off the runway. Friedman Rubin will continue to monitor this story.
